How to pay a comic artist safely

The renaissBlock team · Updated October 1, 2026

You've found an artist whose work you love. You've never met, you may live in different countries, and neither of you can be sure the other will hold up their end. How you structure the payment decides most of what happens next.

The four common ways to pay

1. Everything upfront

Simple, and the artist is fully protected. You carry all the risk: if the artist disappears or the work isn't what you agreed, the money is already gone. Reasonable with someone you've worked with before; risky with a stranger.

2. A deposit, then the rest on delivery

The most common arrangement (often half upfront). It splits the risk, but only at two points. A deposit can still vanish, and the final payment depends entirely on the writer paying once the work has been handed over.

3. Per page or per milestone

You pay as each piece of work arrives: per page, per batch, or per stage (designs, pencils, inks, colors, letters). Nobody is ever far out of pocket. The weak spot is the same as a deposit: each payment still depends on someone choosing to send it.

4. Set aside first, released on approval

The money is set aside before the work starts and released when it's delivered and approved. The artist knows the money exists; you know it only moves when agreed conditions are met. Combined with milestones, it protects both people the most, and it's how renaissBlock works.

What usually goes wrong

  • The artist disappears after a deposit, or misses deadline after deadline.
  • The writer goes quiet once the work is delivered, and the final payment never comes.
  • Endless revisions. "One more change" with no agreed limit eats the artist's time and the writer's schedule.
  • Scope creep. Extra pages or a cover nobody priced turn into an argument.
  • Chargebacks. A card or payment-app payment reversed after the work is delivered leaves the artist unpaid.
  • Unclear ownership. Nobody wrote down when the writer gets the rights to the pages.

A checklist to agree before anyone starts

  1. Scope: page count, which stages the artist does, file format and size.
  2. Price per milestone, not just a total.
  3. Deadlines for each milestone, and what happens if one is missed.
  4. Revisions: how many rounds are included in the price.
  5. Review: how long you have to approve delivered work, and what happens if you don't respond.
  6. Ownership: when the rights to the work pass to you, and whether the artist can show it in their portfolio.
  7. Cancellation: what each side gets back if the project stops.
  8. Fees: who pays any platform or payment fees.

For what each of these looks like written down, see what a comic collaboration agreement should cover.

How paying an artist works on renaissBlock

  • You break the comic into milestones, each with a price and a deadline, and invite an artist. They see every term, including who pays the fee, before they accept, decline or counter.
  • When it's the artist's turn, you fund their work. The money sits in a smart contract on the Solana blockchain, not with renaissBlock and not with either of you.
  • The artist confirms the funded terms; each milestone's deadline runs from when it goes live.
  • Changed your mind? You can cancel a milestone within 24 hours of it starting and get everything back, fee included. A milestone that hasn't started yet can be cancelled at any time.
  • The artist delivers and you approve it, or use one of the two revision rounds included per artist to ask for changes. Once those are used, delivered work is approved as it stands.
  • Approval releases that milestone to the artist. If you don't respond within 72 hours of delivery, it pays out automatically, so silence can't trap an artist's pay.
  • If the artist misses a deadline, they get 48 hours of grace. During it you can extend the deadline, offer the work to another artist, or cancel; if nobody acts, the milestone's funds return to you.
  • Ownership of each milestone's work passes to you when that milestone is released.

It's free to start a project. renaissBlock charges 3% when a milestone pays out, and you choose who covers it: you (on top of the price), the artist (from their pay), or half each. You can pay by card or, on Apple devices, Apple Pay.
